Role Description

A Construction Safety Manager is responsible for developing, implementing, along with monitoring and enforcing safety policies to ensure a secure work environment, compliance with regulatory standards (such as OSHA), and the protection of workers, equipment, and the public. They are crucial for reducing liability, preventing accidents, and minimizing project delays by identifying hazards and conducting regular, in-depth site inspections. The safety Manager works closely with Project Managers, Operations, field Superintendents, and all onsite personnel to foster a culture of safety and accountability.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Policy and Program Management

    • Develop, implement, and enforce site-specific safety plans and company-wide safety programs.

    • Stay current with evolving safety regulations and update policies as needed.

    • Manage and maintain all safety-related documentation, reports, and records, including OSHA 300 Logs.

  • Site Safety Planning & Compliance:

    • Create and enforce site-specific safety plans, ensuring compliance with federal (OSHA), state, and local regulations.

    • Perform risk assessments and Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs) to help proactively identify and control risks for specific tasks.

  • Inspections & Hazard Mitigation:

    • Conduct regular, often daily and weekly site inspections to identify, document, and correct safety hazards, such as fall protection, scaffolding, and electrical dangers. Mitigate potential hazards.

    • Ensure that all equipment, machinery and tools are being inspected and are in safe working condition.

  • Training & Education:

    • Deliver safety training, including orientations for new hires and subcontractors, Toolbox Talks, and specific safety procedures (e.g., HazCom, confined space, PPE).

    • Provide training on proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and other critical safety procedures.

    • Help field team members fill out and record JSA and PTP boards to help mitigate risks in the field.

  • Incident and Accident Investigation & Management:

    • Serve as the primary contact for all onsite incidents, injuries, and near misses.

    • Lead investigation of accidents, near-misses, and injuries (Conduct an RCA) to determine root causes, develop corrective actions, and maintain required records (e.g., OSHA 300 logs)

    • Help Office Admin manage workers’ compensation claims and oversee the return-to-work program for injured employees.

  • Subcontractor Management and Compliance:

    • Review and approve subcontractor safety programs and ensure their compliance with site specific rules and regulatory safety standards.

  • Documentation, Reporting & Compliance:

    • Maintain all safety records, including training logs, inspection reports, and SDS (Safety Date Sheets)

    • Prepare and submit required safety reports to management and regulatory agencies as needed.

    • Lead or accompany all regulatory inspectors (e.g., OSHA) during site walk-throughs.

  • Emergency Preparedness:

    • Develop and maintain emergency evacuation and response plans.

  • Promote a safety culture:

    • Foster an environment where safety is a shared responsibility. Effectively communicate safety procedures and concerns to all levels of the workforce, from field crews to executive leadership.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Education and Experience:

    • Generally, 5-10 years of safety experience in the construction industry Expectations can apply.

    • Proven experience in managing safety on large-scale commercial or civil projects.

    • A bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health and Safety is a plus, relative experience in construction safety management can be an exception.

    Certifications:

  • Often required or preferred:

    • Certified Safety Professional (CSP)

    • Construction Health and Safety Technician (CHST)

    • OSHA 30- Hour or 500

    • First aid/CPR certified

  • Knowledge:

    • Deep understanding of OSHA regulations (especially 29 CFR 1926) and building codes.

  • Communication:

    • Strong verbal and written skills to clearly convey safety protocols to diverse crews and report to management.

  • Physical Demands and Working Conditions:

    • This position requires a mix of office and field work, with significant time spent walking active construction sites in various weather conditions.

    • Must be able to climb ladders and stairs and be comfortable working at heights on scaffolding or elevated roofs.

    • This role involves lifting, caring, and balancing materials up to 60 pounds on occasion.

    • Travel to various jobsites maybe required.

  • Tech Savviness:

    • Proficiency with MS Office and, increasingly, construction safety management software (e.g., Procore, Raken, Safesite).

  • Promoting a safety culture:

    • Foster an environment where safety is a shared responsibility. Effectively communicate safety procedures and concerns to all levels of the workforce, from field crews to executive leadership.

Shift and Schedule

  • 8 hour shift (can vary)

  • Overtime

  • Day shift

  • Monday to Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 5 p.m. 45 hours per week, with occasional extended morning & evening hrs. and weekends as needed and directed by Upper Management.

Work Location: Based on business need and job location; some out-of-area and overnight travel may be required

Reports To: Site management- Foreman, Superintendent and or Operations Manager.
