Role Description

The Commercial Carpenter is responsible for construction, installing, and repairing structures and fixtures in con-residential buildings such as offices, schools, hospitals, and industrial facilities. This role requires proficiency with a wide range of materials and tools, a strong commitment to safety, and the ability to work independently or as part of a team to deliver high-quality results on large-scale projects.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Blueprint Interpretation: Read and interpret architectural blueprints, shop drawings, and technical specifications to determined project layouts and material requirements.

  • Structural Framing: Install metal and wood stud framing systems for interior partitions and exterior walls; perform rough framing for walls, roofs, and trusses.

  • Interior Systems: Hang and finish drywall, install acoustical drop ceilings, and set up specialized interior decor or store fixtures.

  • Exterior & Heavy Work: Construct concrete forms, install roofing systems, and manage exterior siding or metal panels.

  • Site Safety: Adhere strictly to OSHA safety standards, including the use of PPE and safe operation of power tools and heavy machinery.

  • Material Prep: Measure, cut, and shape materials (wood, steel, drywall) using hand and power tools.

  • Job Site Safety: Set up scaffolding, clean debris, and comply with OSHA and company safety regulations.

  • Collaboration: Coordinate with superintendents, other trades, and project managers to meet project deadlines.

Essential Functions

  • Manual Labor: Perform strenuous manual labor in heavy/construction projects, including lifting, bending, squatting, and climbing.

  • Project Support: Assist project team in ensuring timely and successful completion of construction projects.

  • Finish Carpentry: Independently install trim and cabinets with attention to detail and quality.

  • Form Carpentry: Use form carpentry experience with stairs, piers, step down footers, and column diamonds.

  • Roofing: Install sheathing, shingles, soffit, and gutters.

  • Door & Hardware Installation: Remove and install commercial doors, frames, and hardware in various substrates.

  • Blocking Methods: Use eave, wall, and roof blocking methods as required.

  • Ceiling & Partition Installation: Install toilet partitions, accessories, and grid ceiling tile.

  • Drywall: Install, mud, and tape drywall assemblies.

  • Jobsite Maintenance: Maintain a clean job site, secure tools and equipment, and eliminate potential hazards.

Additional skills and qualifications that would be beneficial include:

  • OSHA certification or willingness to obtain certification

  • Ability to read blueprints

  • Experience operating construction machinery

Work Environment & Physical Demands:

  • Outdoor work: Exposure to various weather conditions, dust, and noise on active construction sites.

  • Physical Activity: Frequent standing, walking, lifting, carrying, climbing, and kneeling.

  • Equipment Use: regular use of hand and power tools, ladders, and scaffolding.

  • Safety: Strict adherence to safety protocols and use of PPE at all times.

  • Material Handling: Handle, store, load, and unload materials as needed.

  • Safety Reporting: Follow proper safety and incident reporting procedures and communicate issues to supervisors.

Required Skills & Qualifications

  • Technical Proficiency: Expertise in using hand and power tools (saws, drills, levels) and operating machinery like planers or jointers.

  • Mathematical Skills: Ability to calculate precise measurements, angles, and material take-offs using basic geometry and algebra.

  • Physical Stamina: Ability to lift heavy objects (up to 100 lbs), stand for long periods, and work in varied weather conditions or at heights.

  • Experience/Education: High school diploma or GED required; completion of a carpentry apprenticeship or 2–5 years of professional experience preferred.

  • Certifications: Valid driver’s license required; OSHA 10 or 30-hour certification often mandatory; First Aid and CPR training preferred.

  • Tool Proficiency: Ability to operate a wide variety of electrical and hand tools (saws, drills, levels, laser equipment).

  • Requirements: Reliable transportation and possession of personal basic hand tools.

  • Work Authorization: Must be able to complete I-9 requirements and pass pre-employment screening (background check and drug screening, including Cannabis for safety-sensitive roles).

Work Environment

  • Dynamic Settings: Work in a variety of environments, from high-rise concrete builds to retail renovations, industrial facilities, and institutional buildings.

  • Physical Demands: Regularly exposed to fumes, moving mechanical parts, vibration, extreme weather, heat, humidity, dust, and loud noise. Requires manual dexterity, multi- limb coordination, and excellent stamina.

Shift and Schedule

  • 8 hour shift (can vary)

  • Overtime

  • Day shift

  • Monday to Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 5 p.m. 45 hours per week, with occasional extended morning & evening hrs. and weekends as needed and directed by Upper Management.
